Sealing blood soiled and other areas are often called for in the final phases of cleaning crime scenes and other types of death scenes.

Sealing may include the use of stain and odor reducing liquids as well as various rubber-like substances, depending on circumstances.

Areas sealed will vary by circumstance and the ultimate goal of the cleanup. A small area may be sealed in one room, while an entire room may be sealed in another. It depends upon the need and the service sought.

Oftentimes and entire dwelling or building will be sealed to reduce or remove strong odors. The death odor is known as "miasma" and will go away on its own, but it will linger under certain conditions. It will permeates any man-made or natural substance with a cellulosic structure. Carpet, carpet padding, clothing, paper, wood (especially composite wood), and other substances harbor the strong miasma odors.
